Burning Spear – Reggae Legend

Rodney has been called at once rastafarian preacher, African-American poet, black historian and the principal exponent of the genre that dominated The Ragga scene between 1968 and 1985 and what later began to be called roots reggae. Before Rodney alone got his stage name was, however, Burning Spear name of the vocal trio formed in 1966 that Rodney was in. The other two were Rupert Willington and Delroy Hinds (younger brother of the more famous Justin Hinds). However, it would take a few years the music industry gave them a chance. In 1969, Bob Marley persuaded Coxsone Dodd, owner of Studio One to give the trio an audition, and he especially liked the song “Door Peep”. It was in connection with the young singers would record the song “Door Peep” in Studio One, which they chose to call themselves Burning Spear – originally a nickname for the Kenyan leader Jomo Kenyatta.

Burning Spear was awarded the Grammies in 2000 and 2009 for the year’s best reggae album in 1999 (Calling Rastafari) and 2008 (Jah Is Real), and he has been nominated an additional 11 times (Grammy for reggae started to be distributed only in the 1990s, therefore, none of the classic reggae albums with top reggae musicians in 1970 – and 1980 received a prize.)

Burning Spear is very popular among reggae fans. He is the only one of the Jamaican reggae artists who were there from the beginning, in the late 1960s, who still tours regularly all over the world and continues to release albums with completely newly written material. While reggae in Jamaica has changed back and forth, Burning Spear has stuck to roots reggae. The message to his brothers has been and continues to be self-determination and self-reliance, the message to his fans all over the world is peace and love, and that all religions are identical in their essence.

Burning Spear – we salute you !
